Overview

The Ranfac RBN-114 is an 11 gauge × 4 inch single-use bone marrow biopsy needle in the patented SNARECOIL™ family. The ergonomic handle includes a captive-mechanism lever (gray OPEN/CLOSED indicator) that engages the specimen at the distal cannula tip, allowing the operator to recover a long, intact marrow core in a single advancement. The needle ships sterile by ethylene oxide and is individually packaged for single-patient use.

RBN-114 sits at the standard diagnostic position in the Ranfac SNARECOIL™ portfolio — 11 G × 4 inch for posterior iliac biopsy. The 6 inch RBN-116 covers deeper-access protocols at the same gauge; the larger-bore 8 G family (RBN-84, RBN-86) is selected when higher specimen volume is required.

Clinical Applications

Per 510(k) K983187: For procuring bone marrow core biopsies from patients with hematologic abnormalities. Per IFU 29024-01P: The Ranfac Bone Marrow Biopsy Needle is indicated for the surgical harvesting of bone marrow.

11 gauge × 4 inch is the most common configuration for diagnostic bone marrow biopsy via the posterior superior iliac spine. The SNARECOIL™ captive mechanism is intended to reduce specimen fragmentation that can complicate pathological evaluation. Per the 29024-01P Rev J Instructions for Use, the device is contraindicated for sternal procedures.

Hematology Diagnostics

Lymphoma, leukemia, MDS, multiple myeloma workups requiring intact core specimens for histologic evaluation.

Oncology Staging

Metastatic staging, treatment response monitoring, and disease surveillance protocols.

Pathology Workflows

Long, non-fragmented cores reduce specimen-handling artifacts during fixation, sectioning, and immunohistochemistry.

Pathologist Workflow

Long, intact cores reduce specimen-handling artifacts during fixation, sectioning, and immunohistochemistry — supporting accurate, reproducible reads.

Directions for Use (Summary)

Summary only. The complete 25-step bilingual Instructions for Use (29024-01P Rev J), including contraindications, warnings, and specimen-retrieval technique, accompanies every device and is downloadable below.

  1. Inspect packaging. Confirm integrity; if undamaged, open using aseptic technique.
  2. Inspect the device. Check the cannula and stylet for damage; confirm the capture lever moves freely.
  3. Position the needle adjacent to the biopsy site (per IFU, NOT the sternum — sternal procedures are contraindicated).
  4. Penetrate the cortex with the stylet in place using gentle, firm pressure and alternating rotation.
  5. Remove the stylet once the marrow cavity is entered.
  6. Advance the cannula to the desired specimen length.
  7. Engage SNARECOIL™ capture by setting the handle lever to CLOSED to retain the specimen at the distal tip.
  8. Withdraw the needle using the rotation pattern specified in the IFU.
  9. Transfer the specimen using the supplied probe and probe guide; deposit into fixative.
  10. Dispose of the used device in a sharps biohazard container.

Frequently Asked Questions

What gauge and length is the RBN-114?

11 gauge × 4 inch (~10.2 cm). This is the most common posterior iliac crest configuration.

What does SNARECOIL™ do?

SNARECOIL™ is Ranfac's patented captive specimen-capture mechanism. A lever on the ergonomic handle engages the cannula tip to retain the marrow core during withdrawal, helping recover long, non-fragmented specimens.

Is the RBN-114 FDA cleared?

Yes. Cleared under 510(k) K983187, Class II, Product Code KNW. Prescription use only.

Can the RBN-114 be used for sternal bone marrow biopsy?

No. The 29024-01P Rev J Instructions for Use explicitly contraindicates sternal procedures with this device. Use only on biopsy sites approved by the supervising physician.

Is the RBN-114 sterile and latex-free?

Yes. EO-sterilized, single-patient-use, not made with natural rubber latex. Disposal in a sharps biohazard container per facility policy.

How does the SNARECOIL™ mechanism affect specimen quality?

The captive lever at the distal cannula tip engages and retains the marrow core during withdrawal, allowing the operator to recover a long, intact specimen in a single advancement. Reducing fragmentation supports cleaner fixation and sectioning at the pathology bench — particularly important for immunohistochemistry and flow cytometry workflows.
