Overview

The Ranfac RBN-84 is an 8 gauge × 4 inch single-use bone marrow biopsy needle in the patented SNARECOIL™ family. The 8 G cannula is the largest bore in the SNARECOIL™ line — designed for protocols where larger marrow tissue volume is preferred (e.g., specific research, cell-yield, or pathology workflows). The ergonomic handle includes a captive-mechanism lever for long, non-fragmented core recovery.

RBN-84 is the large-bore 8 G × 4 inch SNARECOIL™ configuration, selected when procedures require higher specimen volume or wider cores than the standard 11 G provides. The 6 inch RBN-86 extends the same gauge for deeper access.

Clinical Applications

Per 510(k) K983187: For procuring bone marrow core biopsies from patients with hematologic abnormalities. Per IFU 29024-01P: The Ranfac Bone Marrow Biopsy Needle is indicated for the surgical harvesting of bone marrow.

8 gauge × 4 inch SNARECOIL™ is selected when posterior iliac crest biopsy requires the largest available specimen volume — including specific cell-yield, immunohistochemistry, or research-grade tissue protocols. The captive SNARECOIL™ mechanism supports long, intact core recovery despite the large bore. Per the 29024-01P Rev J Instructions for Use, the device is contraindicated for sternal procedures.

High-Volume Specimens

8 G large-bore cannula for protocols requiring increased marrow tissue volume.

Hematology Diagnostics

Lymphoma, leukemia, MDS, multiple myeloma workups requiring intact core specimens.

Pathology & Research

Long, non-fragmented cores suitable for immunohistochemistry, flow cytometry preparation, and research tissue protocols.

Pathologist Workflow

Long, intact cores reduce specimen-handling artifacts during fixation, sectioning, and immunohistochemistry — supporting accurate, reproducible reads.

Directions for Use (Summary)

Summary only. The complete 25-step bilingual Instructions for Use (29024-01P Rev J), including contraindications, warnings, and specimen-retrieval technique, accompanies every device and is downloadable below.

  1. Inspect packaging. Confirm integrity; if undamaged, open using aseptic technique.
  2. Inspect the device. Check the cannula and stylet for damage; confirm the capture lever moves freely.
  3. Position the needle adjacent to the biopsy site (per IFU, NOT the sternum — sternal procedures are contraindicated).
  4. Penetrate the cortex with the stylet in place using gentle, firm pressure and alternating rotation.
  5. Remove the stylet once the marrow cavity is entered.
  6. Advance the cannula to the desired specimen length.
  7. Engage SNARECOIL™ capture by setting the handle lever to CLOSED to retain the specimen at the distal tip.
  8. Withdraw the needle using the rotation pattern specified in the IFU.
  9. Transfer the specimen using the supplied probe and probe guide; deposit into fixative.
  10. Dispose of the used device in a sharps biohazard container.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why use the RBN-84 (8 G) instead of the standard RBN-114 (11 G)?

Choose 8 G when a larger marrow specimen volume is needed — for example, specific cell-yield, immunohistochemistry, or research-grade tissue protocols. The 11 G RBN-114 is the more common diagnostic configuration. Site selection and bore choice are physician-determined per the IFU.

What does SNARECOIL™ do?

SNARECOIL™ is Ranfac's patented captive specimen-capture mechanism. A lever on the ergonomic handle engages the cannula tip to retain the marrow core during withdrawal.

Is the RBN-84 FDA cleared?

Yes. Cleared under 510(k) K983187, Class II, Product Code KNW. Prescription use only.

Can the RBN-84 be used for sternal biopsy?

No. The 29024-01P Rev J Instructions for Use explicitly contraindicates sternal procedures.

Is the RBN-84 sterile and latex-free?

Yes. EO-sterilized, single-patient-use, not made with natural rubber latex.

Can SNARECOIL™ configurations be private-labeled?

Yes. Gauge, length, handle ergonomics, and packaging can be customized on the Ranfac single-source platform. Contact us.
